The Holos Project empowers Ukrainian students across the world through one-to-one journalism mentorship.

In its first cohort, nearly 100 Ukrainian students collaborated with their mentors to conceptualize, write, and edit their own articles on topics ranging from the no man's land of the Russian invasion to the latest developments in neuroscience.

Layla Mayfield, Holos Project Mentor

I joined the The Holos Project on a whim, not quite knowing what I’d get myself into. I knew I’d be helping a couple students from Ukraine compose their first English Op-Eds, but I had no idea that I would gain such powerful friendships.

By guiding Holos Project participants through the writing process, I got to find out what type of person they were—I learned what they cared about, where their interests lied, and who they hoped to be in the future. I am still in touch with both of the girls I mentored throughout this process, and we’re cheering each other on on social media all the time!

If you have a passion for English or journalism, I highly recommend learning more about getting involved in the Holos Project.

Anna, Holos Project Student

My name is Anna, I am 16 years old and I am from Ukraine. The whole world knows about the war in my Motherland, but not many people actually realize what a disaster it is. Well, I'll tell you my story.

On February 24, 2022, I woke up to shots. Kyiv was bombarded from 5:00 a.m in the morning. I don't remember much about what happened before that fateful morning. Life was divided into "before" and "after".
